The Hamilton County Coalition/ M.L. King Weed & Seed received $35,000 Grant from Project Safe Neighborhoods to implement a comprehensive, community based approach to reducing youth/ teen involvement in gang related activity.

Why do young people join gangs?

There are numerous reasons why young people join gangs, these are just a few that some young people shared with us……..

Some kids reported being “jumped into” or forced to join a gang on the way to school.

Some teens reported joining a gang because they needed protection at school and in the community.

Some reported that they joined a gang because they where looking for somewhere to fit in……

What did we do about it?

The Hamilton County Coalition/ MLK Weed & Seed enlisted a TEAM of residents, government agencies, nonprofits, faith based entities, health care professionals, and educators to infuse multiple layers of protective factors to help save our young people!

“Although teenagers  learn about drinking from a variety of sources, whether it is family, friends, people they look up to or social or environmental influences, the role parents play is a leading factor in the teen’s decision about alcohol”, says Adrian Botha, spokesperson for the Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use (ARA).
